I have never thought about tests being gender biased or unfair, but it obviously is very common. I agree with the New York court when they ruled that scholarships should be based on more than just SAT scores. I would like to see an example of a gender biased test even though I am pretty sure I have taken one. That is insane that they assume that males do better on mathematics tests than females. How do they assume that they have more experience? I wonder how long it would take them to measure these tests. I wonder if it would actually ever be accurate. How could there be absolutely no biased. Who would be the judge of that? Everyone is different. Just because you take offense to something does not necessarily mean the next person will. Some individuals are more sensitive than others.
There are lots of things that are gender biased such as certain job positions. For example, women tend to be secretaries more so than men. I remember going to a Montessori school with my mentor, we were interviewing them. She was talking about some of her male students wanted to observe them and maybe take a position there. They said that it was unlikely that he would obtain the position because parents are uncomfortable with the idea of a male teacher. They said parents think that that particular teacher will be a pedophile. I asked them if they were an equal opportunity employer and they said yes because it was the law. I told them they were discriminating against men. They said that women just tend to be more nurturing. They have that motherly instinct and intuition. Men tend to do more labor intensive work than women. There are certain jobs that I have not seen women in, for example, football, or hockey. Our bodies were just built differently. Men tend to be structurally stronger than females. Also, men get paid more than women. Women normally tend to cook dinner, and be the caregivers for the children while the men would be the breadwinner. I haven't seen too many homes where the men are stay at home fathers. In my classes now at this university I have only had one male in my education classes. That was three semesters ago. Females just tend to dominate this field especially in the elementary education department. As teachers we need to be fair and consistent and try extremely hard not to pass judgment. You never know which way this world will go unless you give it a chance with an open mind and an open heart!
